‘American Idol’: Is Howard Stern right for the show? ‘The View’ asks if he’s still relevant

American Idol” producers, take note:  The studio audience at “The View” thinks he’s wrong for the show.

Of course, another big moment comes tonight: We learn how new judge Ellen DeGeneres is fitting in. “Idol” airs at 8 tonight on Fox.

Whoopi Goldberg asked those in support of Stern to stand. I counted six people, plus Joy Behar. Hundreds stood up to say they didn’t want Stern on America’s most popular series.

Stern told his listeners on Monday that he is talking to the “Idol” producers and said he’d do the show for $100 million.  He also said there is no better job than judging what he called “that expletive karaoke contest.”

My friend Wayne, the biggest Stern fan in the world, told me: “He played a lot of media clips about taking over the position and discussed in a joking way about what he would do on the show.  He said it would be a no-brainer to work for 100 million for four months out of the year.”

Wayne, of course, wants Stern on “Idol.”

The ladies of “The View” were sharply divided over the notion that Stern could replace Simon Cowell.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck said the problems were Stern’s lack of musical background and whether his content would be right for young viewers.

Sherri Shepherd said the legitimacy of “Idol” would go down with Stern as a judge.

Behar defended Stern, saying his introduction on “Idol” would be good television.

Then came the discussion sure to annoy Stern fans.

Shepherd said Stern suffered in jumping to satellite radio. “I don’t know if he’s as relevant as he used to be,” Shepherd said.

What do you say to that, fans?

Behar disagreed: “He’s still relevant because he’s interesting to listen to.”

Guest host Brooke Shields, who had a hard time breaking in, also supported Stern and said he would be good at railing at bad contestants.

But what will “Idol” producers make of how the “View” studio audience reacted?
